To celebrate World Environment Day in our local area, an event will be held in Vimiera Reserve, Essex Street Epping, on Sunday 5 June from 11am to 2pm. “To mark the significance of the area, I will be planting a eucalyptus tree in the environs of the Blue Gum High Forest,” said Mr. Alexander. “Eucalypts (gum trees) can live up to 400 years and only begin to form a nesting hollow suitable for wildlife by around 100 years of age. A lack of tree hollows limits the survival of many hollow dependent species which includes most parrots, cockatoos and owls.”
World Environment Day is a day to stimulate awareness of the environment. It is on 5 June every year: the day the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. Each year on this day, the United Nations Association of Australia seeks to focus world attention on the environment and, in particular, on positive programs that work towards protecting or restoring the world's natural heritage.
“Please come along and help celebrate our unique and beautiful environment,” said Mr.Alexander“TerrysCreek and the surrounding bushland is a significant wildlife corridor of the Lane Cove National Park. Over 70 varieties of birds have been identified around Terry’s Creek including rare and threatened species such as the Gang -gang Cockatoos, Little Lorikeets and Powerful Owls. It’s important to preserve areas such as this, not only for the wildlife but for our children’s children to enjoy.”
